Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Texas City is hosting the annual Run to Remember, a 5k run open to the public that honors Coast Guard members who made the ultimate sacrifice, on Saturday morning at Nessler Park in Texas City, Texas.

The event is especially meaningful this year as it marks the 25th anniversary of the loss of two of MSU Texas City shipmates. In 1994, Senior Chief Petty Officer James A. Pavini and Chief Petty Officer Charles R. Bloome lost their lives in a helicopter crash while flying offshore to conduct a vessel exam.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Coast Guard Foundation’s Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund to assist children and spouses left behind.

“Senior Chief Petty Officer Pavini and Chief Petty Officer Bloome truly exemplify honor, respect and devotion to duty,” said Cmdr. Eric Carrero. “Please join us as we remember and honor our fallen shipmates.”

The Run to Remember is held annually at various locations, predominantly where Coast Guard units are located. In its inaugural year, the event involved a single runner who covered the 100 mile distance from Key Largo to Key West, Florida, wearing a shirt printed with the names of 20 Coast Guard men and women lost since Sept. 11, 2001.

MSU Texas City conducts the prevention and response missions of the Coast Guard across three deep-water ports in the largest petrochemical complex. These missions include vessel and facility inspections, marine environmental responses and casualty investigations. Crews conduct over 1,500 vessel and facilities inspections, over 100 marine casualty responses and approximately 150 flight hours annually.

Please visit MSU Texas City’s Facebook page for event updates.
