EDINBURG, Texas — Authorities say a man suspected of shooting a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper as he investigated a vehicle collision in South Texas has been arrested after fleeing hours earlier.

DPS said just before 1 a.m. Sunday that a 24-year-old man from Edinburg had been arrested. DPS said Sunday morning that the trooper was out of surgery and was in stable but critical condition.

The trooper has been identified as Moises Sanchez.

DPS officials say a preliminary investigation shows that at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday the trooper approached a vehicle crash in Edinburg where the driver fled on foot. The trooper was then shot after locating the man believed to be the driver nearby. The suspect then fled again.

After the shooting, authorities asked the public to avoid the area, saying the suspect was believed to be nearby.
