Island police officers have ramped up a years-long battle with city hall by buying space on a roadside billboard castigating their employer for its pension system.

The billboard, clearly visible to motorists driving north on the I-45 freeway, first thanks them for visiting the island before lambasting it as the “home of the worst police retirement in Texas”.

It represents an ever-increasing effort on the part of Galveston’s municipal police association to increase public pressure on the city, which is resisting its suggestions for reforming the officers’ overstretched pension fund.
