GALVESTON, Texas – On Thursay, February 7th, 2019, a Galveston County jury convicted a Galveston man for Aggravated Robbery and on Friday, February 8th, 2019 that same jury sentenced him to 23 years in prison.
 
John Russell Shepeard, age 27, was charged with robbing the Amex Pawn store in Texas City at gunpoint. Surveillance video introduced in trial showed Shepeard entering the store and browsing miscellaneous items before asking one of the Apex Pawn employees to show him a firearm that was for sale. Once the firearm was given to Shepeard, he pulled another firearm from his pocket and threatened the employee before fleeing the store.    Evidence was introduced showing that shortly before entering Amex Pawn, Shepeard had been at a different pawn shop in Texas City and also asked to view a firearm at that location. Shepeard was identified as the actor after law enforcement released stills from surveillance video to the public.  
 
During the punishment phase of trial, the jury heard testimony that Shepeard was convicted of an additional robbery that he had committed prior to being arrested for the robbery of Amex Pawn. The jury then sentenced Shepeard to 23 years in the Texas Department of Public Criminal Justice Correctional Institutional Division. He will not become eligible for parole until after serving half of his sentence.
 
Shepeard was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Ross Hill in the 56th District Court with Judge Lonnie Cox presiding.
