SAN ANTONIO -- After the escape of three inmates at the Bexar County jail, the Sheriff's office created a specialized team to look for contraband and help prevent future jail breaks.

The newly formed Contraband Abatement Team or CAT focuses on finding things prisoners are not allowed to have.

These CATs are on the prowl, stopping violence, drug use and escape attempts before they happen.

Here's an inside look at changes coming to the Bexar County jail

The team works hand-in-hand with the jail’s maintenance department to know what could be altered.

"Our job is to learn how to disassemble and reassemble. Figure out what items will utilize to make contraband and prevent it," said Sgt. Brandon Ward, the head of the CAT team.

CAT investigations and searches are leading to physical changes in the jail as well.

"We are going to be removing every light in every cell and they will now be up in the ceiling. These lights are easily tampered with," said Bobby Hogeland, Assistant Chief Deputy with BCSO.

Currently there are 6 people working as CAT team officers and the Sheriff’s office wants that number to grow.
