Search Archives:

Saturday, May 5, 2018 a boater on Lake Travis called 911 and reported that a family member swimming near their boat went underwater and never resurfaced. Efforts to locate the missing swimmer, MANUEL SALAS, 53 of Elgin, have been unsuccessful to date.

TCSO, assisted by other agencies, has been searching for Salas during daylight hours every day since he was reported missing. The search efforts have included the utilization of Starfish Surface Search Sonar, Hammerhead Tripod-Mounted Mechanical Search Sonar, Cline Deep Sidescan Sonar and two Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs). APD EOD Deep Divers were on the water Monday – Thursday and searched potential targets identified via sonar. DPS 100 Helicopter conducted aerial searches. TCSO Lake Patrol Deputies operated sonar, conducted grid searches and shoreline searches. K9s were also utilized in the search efforts. The area searched is ten times greater than the area where Salas was reportedly last seen. The water in that part of Lake Travis is 130-150 feet deep (equivalent to a 15 story building).

Lake Patrol Deputies will continue to respond to calls on Lake Travis and while on duty, will also conduct surface and shoreline searches. Sonar and Dive Team searches will be discontinued.

TCSO is grateful to all the local agencies who assisted in the search and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Salas as they face this difficult time.
