Convicted child killer Genene Jones, a former pediatric nurse dubbed the “Angel of Death” who was convicted in 1984 for overdosing toddlers with pain killers, is in court this morning for a hearing on a speedy trial.

Jones, 67, worked at hospitals in San Antonio and for a Kerrville pediatrician in the 1980s and was convicted of killing Chelsea McClellan, 15 months, who died in 1982 from an overdose of muscle relaxers given to her by the nurse.

In May 2017, the grand jury returned its first indictment in the death of Joshua Sawyer on Dec. 12, 1981. A month later, Jones was indicted in three more cases in the deaths of Richard “Ricky” Nelson, 8 months, who died July 3, 1981; Patrick Zavala, 4 months, who died Jan. 17, 1982; and Rosemary Vega, 2 years old, who died Sept. 16, 1981. In October, she was indicted again in the death of Paul Villarreal, who was 3 months old when he died on Sept. 24, 1981.
