A man police say is involved in the Monday robbery of an armored car driver and subsequent shootout with two Austin police officers, one of whom was injured, has an extensive criminal history, Police Chief Art Acevedo said Tuesday.

Mark Fruge, 51, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, three counts of attempted capital murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping.

Without elaborating further, Acevedo said that the suspect has a criminal record "that would indicate he has not learned and does not belong out here in this community."
