Police shootings rarely unjustified; training is intensive

January 12, 2013 at 11 p.m.

Texas peace officers involved in deadly shootings undergo more intensive shooting training than in other states and most often are found to be justified in their actions, say two criminal justice professors who are former peace officers.

From 1997 to present, the Big Country counted 11 fatal officer-involved shootings. Five occurred in 2012.

Phillip Lyons, professor of criminal justice at Sam Houston State University, said "the law of small numbers" must be taken into account.
