Police chief: Training, common sense key in foot chases

January 12, 2013 at 11:28 p.m.

CORPUS CHRISTI - In Dallas it took a tragedy for police to enact the foot chase protocol the former head of police training implemented years before.

In July an officer in pursuit of a suspect opened fire, killing a bystander and igniting community outrage about the way police pursue suspects, according to news reports.

In Corpus Christi no official policy on foot chases is in effect, but officers are instructed to apply their training if they have to pursue a suspect. That training is the same as in Dallas - because Corpus Christi Police Chief Floyd Simpson is the one who signed off on the protocol as head of police training in Dallas, before bringing those same ideas to Corpus Christi.
