Police investigate stabbing death

ORANGE -- Police were dispatched to the area of 6th Street and Cheery Ave. Thursday where they discovered a man with multiple stab wounds lying in the street.

Devon Walker, 18, of Orange, was transported to Baptist Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officers discovered evidence of a possible burglary at a nearby residence while investigating the assault on Walker.

Police say the two crimes may be related.

AUSTIN -- State Bar of Texas officials Thursday night announced that Trey Apffel of League City defeated Steve Fischer of Rockport in a run-off election to become the next president-elect.

Trey Apffel of League City received 14,721 votes, or 52.55 percent, and Steve Fischer of Rockport received 13,290 votes, or 47.45 percent.

Worker falls from ‘unsafe’ ladders, files $1M lawsuit against employer

GALVESTON -- After his back was injured last year while working on a historic Galveston home, Carlos Alfaro is suing his employer for $1 million.

A lawsuit filed in Galveston County District Court claims Galvez Remodeling Inc. and its owner, Victor Galvez, instructed Alfaro to install molding on a dormer at the property “under unsafe conditions.”

The suit shows Galvez attached two ladders together so the Alfaro could reach the dormer, which is about 25 feet from the ground.

According to the suit, Alfaro climbed the ladders only to fall after they collapsed, suffering the injuries which are the focus of the litigation.

He blames the respondents for:
¦Failing to provide him with a safe place to work;
¦Failing to warn him of the purportedly dangerous condition;
¦Negligently performing their own task in connection to his work;
¦Creating and allowing hazards to exist in and about the jobsite;
¦Negligently supervising said jobsite;
¦Failing to exercise job safety responsibilities;
¦Failing to manage, inspect and control the area; and
¦Ordering him to use rigged ladders.

Alfaro adds that Galvez did not subscribe to workers compensation insurance.

A jury trial is requested.

GALVESTON - A Galveston County judge has been indicted on criminal charges that he repeatedly misused his official powers to retaliate against attorneys appearing before him and other officials.

Galveston County Court at Law Judge Christopher Dupuy was charged Wednesday with two felony counts of obstruction or retaliation, two misdemeanor counts of official oppression and four misdemeanor counts of abuse of official capacity, the Houston Chronicle reported .

If Dupuy is convicted on any of the criminal counts, he will be removed from the bench. He was arrested at 3 p.m.
