Deardorff, James, & Krueger medal again for La Porte in State’s annual Police Games

LPPD’s Deardorff receives pair of medals, James (far left) w/ partners
and Krueger transitions from pistols to running

Every year law enforcement personnel from numerous city, county, state, and federal agencies travel to various Texas locations to compete in the Texas Police Athletic Federation’s annual Texas Police Games. This year’s games were held primarily in the Nassau Bay/Clear Lake area, with events being hosted among different venues throughout Harris/Galveston County. Of the many events held, La Porte’s Assistant Chief Steve Deardorff, along with Sergeants Robbie James and John Krueger, brought home medals to the department for another year.

While Deardorff and Krueger participated in differing events both LPPD participants showed their skills at the Les Early Firearms Training Center in Pasadena. The Assistant Chief earned a pair of bronze medals in both the individual and team Tactical Pistol events.  Pistol events involved shooters using cover and concealment while safely and accurately resolving stage scenarios entailing moving targets, shooting with either hand, and distinguishing between hostile and friendly targets.  Scoring for both events involved a balance of accuracy and speed.

Combining both shooting and running, Krueger earned gold in the Biathlon competition.  The continuous event included both standing and kneeling versions of pistol shooting from 25 yards, mixed together with a five separate ½ mile obstacle-based runs, totaling 2.5 miles.

Training was noted as a major influence in this year’s success.  Deardorff is the agency’s S.W.A.T. commander, Range Master, and has been involved in competitive pistol shooting for over 30 years.  Krueger mentioned the inter-agency partnership between Baytown and La Porte S.W.A.T. teams, “my follow S.W.A.T. team members are the ones who are really good, I’m just fortunate enough to be a part of the team and learn from their experience.”

The Police Games bowling events were also attended by La Porte’s Sergeant Robbie James, brothers Greg and Scott James each having long-standing service with Pasadena and Baytown police departments, as well as recently retired LPPD Officer Mike Martin.  The four local lawmen were able to pool their resources and earn a bronze in the team competition.  All of the listed law enforcement veterans should be commended as they represented area police agencies in an honorable fashion by displaying fine examples of marksmanship, athleticism, as well as interagency camaraderie.
