FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION                                                PRESS RELEASE

March 28, 2014                          Media and Communications Office

DPS Honors Texans for Outstanding Emergency Efforts

DALLAS – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven McCraw today presented two private citizens with Director’s Awards in recognition of their attempt to save the life of a motorist. The awards were presented today in at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

“The hospital employees we recognize today are true Good Samaritans, who selflessly stepped in, while off duty, to provide courageous assistance during an emergency situation,” said Director McCraw. “The state of Texas is grateful for their noble efforts to try to save the life of a victim in need.”

Hayley Deis and Richard Peters each received the Director’s Award for their selfless actions on November 29, 2013, to help a motorist involved in a crash on U.S. Highway 290 in Washington County. After visiting family on Thanksgiving, Deis and Peters were traveling on Highway 290 when they noticed the crash and pulled over to render aid and help administer CPR. Tragically, the driver, who reportedly suffered a heart attack, did not survive.

Several other travelers also responded to help the driver and will receive awards at a later date.
