GALVESTON COUNTY EXPANDS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SERVICES

Partners with local non-profits while savings taxpayers over $200,000

November 12, 2013

GALVESTON, TX – The Galveston County Commissioners’ Court is pleased to announce the partnership between several non-profit agencies to deliver direct financial assistance services to citizens in need during troubled economic times.

The County has partnered with Inter-Faith Caring Ministries, M.I. Lewis Social Services, Salvation Army and St. Vincent’s House – all serving different regions throughout the county while regularly assisting families and individuals in need of assistance with expenses such as rent and utilities.

Prior to the merger, the Galveston County Community Services Department directly oversaw the disbursement of over $140,000 in assistance each year. However, the price tag in maintaining the county financial assistance program cost over $220,000 in staffing and administrative overhead.

When asked about the program, County Judge Mark Henry stated, “Entering into this partnership with local non-profits allows us to eliminate government bureaucracy and save taxpayers over $220,000 while at the same time providing over $25,000 in additional assistance than we have in the past. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

For more information regarding financial assistance for rent and utilities, please contact the Galveston County Community Services Director Connie Nicolson at (409) 770-5543 or one of the partnered organizations listed below:
