A Facebook page entitled 'A Cup of Joe in Shoreaces', posted this memo. “There has been a rash of burglaries in Shoreacres. I know of two that happened on Fairfield. We need to start being more observant. If we see suspicious activity we need to call the police. If we see a vehicle that doesn’t belong call the police. If we see people carrying items from a house that doesn’t belong call the police. Most burglaries happen during the day time, because they want you to be away from the home. If someone, enters your home while you’re there that is a totally different story and your life is in danger. However, these incidents occurred around 12 Noon and 4 p.m., both times they left items stacked by the door. They must have been scared off.”

Shoreacres City Councilwoman Nancy Schnell responded by sounding her own alarm to constiuents.

Hello All,

"I can also tell you that on the evening of May 22, 2013 a home that is under construction across the street from us was burglarized. Lock it or lose it.  True-to-form I will not candy-coat this fact; we have crews of folks in our city doing repairs on streets...they watch...they talk...so should we.  I have already contacted my home alarm company; if you have a home alarm system you should as well.  Above all, if you see something, say something.  Remember 911 doesn't get anything happening quickly here in Shoreacres.  Please program 281-326-5900 into you and your loved ones phones.  That is your life-line, for now.

"Eyes Wide Open!  Should this trend continue, someone will be hurt.  I pray it is not a citizen."

This is an example of how local officials as well as citizens, may use the social media to inform neighbors of crime in the neighborhoods. If you don't have a Facebook or Twitter account for your neigborhood, have a neighborhood meeting and discuss establishing one.  It may help put a stop to crime in your neighborhood.

Comments:

Very good advice. Open up your curtains and look outside once in awhile and see what is going on in your neighborhood, look outside when you get up off the couch, go outside and make an appearance. Keep your eyes open and look out for your neighbor!!

How many burglaries does it take to make a rash?
