MCALLEN -- A joint undercover operation by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s Cyber Crimes Unit, the McAllen Police Department and the Rio Grande City Police Department successfully resulted in the arrest of Alberto Guerrero Gomez, 34, on Thursday for online solicitation of a minor and reckless driving.

According to Cyber Crimes Unit officers, Gomez initiated online chats and exchanged sexually graphic text messages with someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl. The “girl” was actually an undercover Cyber Crimes Unit officer. Gomez sexually propositioned the girl and arranged to meet her on April 10 at a location in McAllen. When Gomez arrived at the meeting, Cyber Crimes Unit officers and McAllen and Rio Grande City police officials observed him park his car – but then he reversed course and left the location at a high rate of speed. Later that evening, Gomez initiated another online chat with the “girl” and requested that she meet him at another location the following day.

The investigation indicated that on April 11, Gomez exchanged text messages with the “girl” and confirmed the second meeting location in McAllen. Law enforcement authorities observed Gomez drive past the meeting location several times before he again fled the scene at a high rate of speed. According to McAllen police officers, Gomez violated several traffic laws as he sped away which resulted in damage to his vehicle. After Gomez abandoned the vehicle downtown, McAllen police officers located and arrested him at a McAllen thrift store. Law enforcement officials conducted a search of Gomez and confiscated his cell phone, which revealed the sexually explicit text messages he had exchanged with the “girl.”

At the time of his arrest, Gomez indicated that he was employed in the food service industry in the City of Pharr. He also indicated he is not a U.S. citizen.
