TIKI ISLAND - Galveston County Sheriff’s detectives are continuing an investigation into an incident this morning involving an off-duty UTMB Police officer.  

Dispatchers received a call shortly before 7:00 AM today from the officer reporting some sort of incident involving another driver traveling north on the IH-45 Causeway.  Early reports indicate both drivers apparently left the freeway at Exit 4, with both ending up on a dead-end service road adjacent to the northbound Causeway.  During the moments that followed, the officer discharged his service weapon at the other vehicle as it left that scene.   

That vehicle was ultimately found in the 200 block of Lokai in Tiki Island, and its driver, later identified as Joseph Henry Sanford, 35, of La Marque, was found at a nearby convenience store.  Sanford was ultimately charged with misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana after he was found holding a small quantity of the substance.  He was released on bond late this afternoon.    

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, and Sheriff’s detectives are still asking questions about how the entire event unfolded.  They are continuing their investigation, with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office slated to review the matter once the probe is complete.
