PRESS RELEASE

RE: Kermic Ray Gamble

On 3/18/13 at about 0831 our department received a call from a 33 year old man (a Texas City resident on Leaning Oak) who reported he was driving his vehicle and he saw an unknown male driving his wife’s vehicle which is a 2009 Maroon GMC Yukon which had been reported stolen.

He followed his wife’s vehicle to a house in Texas City where the male got out of the vehicle, went in the house and came out quickly, got back in the vehicle and left. The victim did not know the man driving his wife’s vehicle.

The victim kept a safe distance away and was in communication with the police department. He followed the vehicle until the police got behind his wife’s vehicle and attempted to stop it. TCPD officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop with lights and sirens. The operator would not stop. The vehicle went north on I45, made a U-turn at 517 in Dickinson, headed back south and into residential areas of Texas City and La Marque

The operator reached speeds of 100 to 110 on the highway, 60 to 90 in residential areas.

At one point during the chase Constable Montez attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, felt his life was in danger and discharged one shotgun round at the fleeing vehicles tire. The shot did not slow the suspect. After the shotgun was discharged a 15 year old girl, who was in the vehicle and unknown to police, called her father, who called the police department. Contact was made by the dispatcher with the passenger. She was instructed to tell the driver to stop and surrender himself to the police.

At 0858 TCPD ordered all TCPD officers to terminate the pursuit and continue to follow the vehicle. The factors that contribute to this decision is due to the highest grade of the offenses known that he had committed and his identity was obtained; also his recklessness, speed and disregard of traffic laws and further endangering innocent lives.

At or about 9:14 am, the 15 year old female was able to get out of the fleeing vehicle. She was detained by the police and interviewed. The suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle at 14th St N and 2nd Ave S in Texas City. A foot pursuit ensued. The suspect was taken into custody in a vacant upstairs apartment in the 1200 block of 3rd Ave N at 09:47 am through the use of TCPD K-9 Unit and a police tazer.

Kermic Ray Gamble was charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Evading Arrest.  He is held in the Galveston County Jail in lieu of $45,000.00 bail.

Let me guess, someone meant to say they were told to back off and follow from a safe distance.
