LEAGUE CITY - The City of League City and the League City Volunteer Fire Department are mourning the loss of one of the City's firefighter cadets today.  62 year old Donald Mize collapsed after a routine training on Wednesday, March 6 at about 8 p.m. at the League City Drill Field.  He was treated at the scene, then transported to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Mize began training as a League City Volunteer Fire Department cadet in February.  He was also a retired teacher who taught at Clear Creek Independent School District's Clear View Education Center.  Mize was very active in the community and a member of the League City Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.

"This is a very tragic loss for the family, the City and the entire community.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mize family and the League City Volunteer Fire Department, " said Mayor Tim Paulissen.

The City and the volunteer fire department would also like to extend thanks to all of the agencies who have assisted the department during this difficult time.  Webster Fire Department, Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Forest Bend Volunteer Fire Departments and Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department assisted League City with calls Wednesday evening and several other agencies have also lent support.  "The show of support has been a great comfort to the League City Fire Department family, we can't express enough the gratitude we feel towards our brothers and sisters in other departments and agencies who have come to offer support," said Fire Chief Brad Goudie.

The City of League City staff and elected officials will be wearing red and black ribbons in honor of Mize, and City flags have been lowered to half-staff.  So far, funeral services have not been set.

Comments:

I've known Don Mize since he was my teacher at Ball High School in 1980. Talked off and on over the next 20 years until I moved to League City in the neighborhood adjacent to his, and we spoked weekly, if not daily.

I'd see Don at church, or at Knights of Columbus events like the fish fry @ St Mary's Church in League City. He was also a fixture at the YMCA in West League City I'd see quite often.

He'd always ask me about my family, my motorcycle trips, and my career with the Galveston Police Department. I will miss our conversations.

I was blessed to have known Don, and am thankful. God bless, and rest in peace my friend.
