AUGUSTA, GA - Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta, Ga. told police he observed a customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on surveilance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket.  When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door.

Outside on the sidealk were four Marines collecting toys for the Toys for Tots program.  Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpt. Phillip Duggan, in the back; the injury did not appear to be severe.

After police and an ambulance arrived at the scene, Cpt. Duggan was taken for treatment.

"The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw ..... injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off the curb after stabbing the Marine," according to a police report.

Comments:
Why would anyone need to comment on this story. Obviously, the integrity of the Marines and the local cops is beyond reproach. And the stupid thief brought a knife to a figurative gun fight.
Posted by xcop at 5/20/2011 9:29:21 AM

Ha... love it.. he should watch those curbs.. the ones that hit back.. lol.
Posted by Desiredbylife at 5/20/2011 10:18:52 AM

Wow, guess this teaches you not to MESS with our Military! A slip and fall can almost be worse than a head on collision!!! Damn Curbs!

Posted by Charly at 5/20/2011 11:21:49 AM

This is so funny. Real life is sometimes.I have heard stories from years in law enforcement like this. The best was about a robber that fell on his knife three times trying to get away. No, the Police weren't involved it happened before they arrived.
Posted by DL at 5/20/2011 11:54:47 AM

Thief was lucky that he even got to go to the Hospital. That curb might have been packing a knife also and killed him. lol Curb's I hang out with are not so nice.
Posted by Dave Rhode/Blade at 5/20/2011 6:46:07 PM

How about the Justice of the Peace, called to the scene to pronouce the man dead in the bathtub. The dead man had 3 bullet holes in him and the JP ruled Death By Drowning. When questioned about his ruling he said calmly, "He drowned from all the water running into his lungs through the bullet holes."
Case closed.

I hate to rain on your parade, but this story is an oldie and, according to Snopes, the best part of it isn't even true.

The story was basically true but, as often happens on the internet, someone added his own take by embellishing the incident.

The part about the thief slipping on the curb and sustaining numerous serious injuries was made up. It’s too damn bad that this part of the story did not actually happen!

I love American Soldiers!!! Always and Forever - you never let us down!!!
Posted by Linda Osburn at 5/23/2011 6:32:46 PM

Yeh, kinda surprised he didn’t land on his backside right on top of that knife
Posted by Fillup at 6/10/2011 8:45:07 AM

Well, First off Marines are not Soldiers !! They are MARINES ! Second, thats just too bad for the theif he cant mess with the Marines
Posted by Richard Cox at 6/15/2011 8:16:29 AM

LMAO, you have to watch your step after you stab a Marine in the back. I wonder how many times he "fell" off the curb.
Posted by Snafu at 9/19/2011 7:32:17 AM

oh its true! i have the news paper article hanging on my wall!
Posted by IJB at 10/17/2011 12:17:11 PM

The last paragraph is a hoax and was never written orignally. Stupid marines!
Posted by Marc at 10/21/2011 8:30:08 AM

Yeah to the guy saying "stupid Marines" you must be a stupid squid aka NAVY and while the Marine Corps is a Dept of the Navy you should know ITS THE MENS DEPARTMENT!!!! Semper FI
Posted by SteelerBlitz at 10/25/2011 5:29:56 PM

I like the part where they changed his name to Tyrone Jackson, that was particularly racist.
Posted by Ben at 10/28/2011 9:20:33 AM

The story is true.....the last paragraph is an embellishment.

I sure do hope that the surveillance cameras also captured the incidence with the marines and this guy's "fall".
Posted by BJ at 11/7/2011 7:51:28 PM

I HOPE YOU FALL OFF THE HOSPITAL BED AS WELL!

I love the story, but when did we start collecting toys for tots in "MAY" hummm. This goes back to my first rule... When you violate someone’s rights, you forfeit your own.

Hate to break it you you all but this story is only partially true folks. Someone added the ass whipping to the story to glorify it. Sounded too good to be true if you ask me. I give it an A+ for creativity though.

Things like that DO happen.. My son, who was a Marine, was being harassed one night at a bar. As he was leaving the bar, 4 Army brats approached him and proceeded to punch my son. Well, when the policemen got there the 4 Army brats were all out cold on the pavement (must have been from falling off the curb)...the police were looking for someone else..an accomplice to my son, who was "Lone Marine Standing" They then realized that my son was the one and only person who had downed the other 4.. !!! What more can I say?... They just laughed and told my son to go home!!
Posted by MotherofaMarine at 11/12/2011 11:57:48 AM

Wish I coulda been there to "help" !
Posted by Shawn at 11/19/2011 5:49:35 PM

I hate to correct you Motherof Marine, but once a Marine ALWAYS a Marine... Semper Fi

I love this story, I am a M.O.M.
Posted by Laura at 11/21/2011 8:50:34 AM

For those who keep referring to Snopes be warned even Snopes is full of hoaxes as well. There are several stories on Snopes that they claim to be truth which are in fact not and some they claim to be false turned out to be true. Just like Wikipedia, snopes is nothing but entertaining at times.
Posted by DSOD Chief at 12/2/2011 6:44:00 PM

I have never known Marines to collect toys in May.
