the start of the 2018-2019 school year around the corner, League City
joined forces with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and Clear Creek
ISD to hold a full-scale active shooter exercise on Friday, August 3.
The exercise, which was held at Clear Creek Intermediate, featured a
realistic scenario of a gunman inside a public school with multiple
fatalities and injuries.
Sponsored by the League City Emergency Management Department, the
training provided the three agencies with an opportunity to evaluate
current response concepts, plans, and capabilities for a response to an
active shooter event in League City.
We brought in quite a few role players or actors for the scenario,”
said League City Emergency Management Director Ryan Edgehill. “They all
got moulage, or disaster makeup, to make them look like they had serious
injuries, which added a sense of realism and a sense of stress and
chaos that our responders aren’t used to seeing in a training.”
The training, which has been in the works for the past six months, follows a June tabletop exercise between the three agencies. Both
focused on local emergency responder command and control coordination,
critical decisions, communication with parents, the public, and media,
and integration of police and fire assets necessary to save lives and
protect public health and safety.
“I think this is a great time for all the different agencies to come
together and create as live of a scenario as possible and get into some
real activity that we can learn from and try to get better so we can
continue to do what we do best, which is to make sure we have a safe
learning environment for all children,” said CCISD Superintendent Greg
League City plans to organize more training exercises like this in the future.
This type of training makes good sense. I wonder if other cities in Galveston County are doing the same. The Sheriff's Office also supplies School Resource Deputies to TCISD and DISD. I hope they are also training with local agencies.
I wonder if each district pays the deputies the same salary and extra job money. The job description must be similar, so the salaries should be the same. See my blogs at www.runningcode3.net
