Officer Daniel Vela - Reinstated
Officer Daniel Vela - Reinstated
February 5, 2013

The City of Shoreacres held a public hearing on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. as requested by Officer Daniel Vela to address his unjust and abrupt termination.  Shoreacres City Hall was overflowing with citizens and peace officers in support of Officer Vela.

Shoreacres city attorney, Dick Gregg, was present representing the city as well as the newly appointed chief of police, David Newman.  Attorney Greg Cagle was present to represent Officer Vela.

I will summarize as follows.  Officer Vela was terminated after a complaint was filed by the chief of police, stemming from a citation for theft of service issued by Office Vela on Monday, November 26, 2012.  Officer Vela noticed that city water was being stolen on a non-permitted location at 1005 South Country Club in Shoreacres.  The two "gentlemen" accused of stealing water have combined outstanding warrants, and a recent in city drug possession charge against them.  Officer Vela was terminated on the grounds of damage to property and official oppression.

As the facts were addressed over the course of two hours; public works damaged (broke the illegal pipe from the meter); and Officer Vela invited one responsible party to accompany him to city hall for a citation.  Neither the cited, nor the property owner filed a complaint; solely, the new police chief, David Newman.  That will and did not pass muster, as that is not legal.

The lack of proper documentation was laughable!  When one of the reasons cited by a police chief is, "I felt that it was intentional damage".  Well I feel like I should make $100.00 per hour, yet it is not so.

Shoreacres City council did the right thing and overturned the termination of a man that has had no disciplinary action against him in twenty plus years of law enforcement service.  Alderman Steve Jones abstained.

And the standing room only crowd went wild!

I have renewed faith in our system.  There is nothing like an outpouring of public support.  Yet, there is still much work to be done to cleanse our city of ineptitude and corruption.  To quote my dad, "There is nothing that ugly hates more than the light of day to shine upon it."  I agree.

Former Member
Shoreacres City Council

Comments:

I have visited with David Newman on several occasions and am surprised by his actions as stated in this article. Although he has been a officer in Shoreacres for the past seven years and a police officer for more than twenty years, as the newly appointed chief of police I hope the authority doesn't go to his head or his tenure as chief will be short lived. Congratulations to Daniel Vela on his reinstatement.

Small town with a Chief looking for something to do. Always a good feeling as a peace officer to know if the citizens don't file an official complaint against you........your good ole chief will pick up the slack.
Sheesh..

I was glad to see that Officer Vela was given his job back. He was fired in my opinion because he is the BEST OFFICER we have and he does his job correctly and our newly appointed Chief doesnt like that! Its time for a new Chief, Vela would be a great Chief! Also its time for a new City Administrator! Just my opinion! Everyone has one!

I don't live in Shoreacres, nor anywhere near it. Yet there seems to be several things going on here that, as a retired law-enforcement-agent, is interesting.
The chief didn't weigh the service of the officer, i.e., years, records, discipline, etc before he acted. His act was a personal one, for some reason or other. I hope his action was just lack of experience as a leader, and not something personal. Like Officer Daniel Vela, with so much time in the department, possibly posing a threat of seeking the chief of police position.
No one filed a complaint for good reason. They knew they were wrong and Vela was right.
Of utmost importance, and one the community can and should be proud of if that they allowed the request of Vela to happen. If police do their job with the feeling of, "Judge me by how I serve you, not by what one individual in power can do to my life." life will evolve as it should.
As said, I am not a citizen of your community, but I thank you as a community for taking the step that our Constitution guarantees us, FAIRNESS. That is what Daniel Vela wanted, only that, no more and he got it because his community seems to be a fair and honest one. The best way to have good law enforcement is to back the good, and dump the those who are not worthy of the badge. Just saying. Congratulations to Mr. Vela and the city of Shoreacres.

All this B.S. that is happening in Shoreacres must be really embarrassing for its residents to admit that they live there.

I know the case and know Officer Daniel Vela. He didn't do anything wrong to be fired. It was wrong and I'm glad that he was given his job back. Vela is an honest man and was just doing his job. He saw a crime happening and he put a stop to it. Its time for a new Chief and Vela would be a good choice......

The police officer should get back pay for all time he was off and charge it to the chief

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to post your comments. The story continues, and I will keep all up-to-date. I am pleased to report that Officer Vela is back on the streets protecting the citizens who care for him so much!
