A Department of Public Safety trooper and the suspect he had pursued across two counties were wounded in a shootout Sunday afternoon in far east Bexar County, an official said.

Shortly after 3 p.m., the trooper initiated a stop of a black Chrysler 300 sedan for a traffic violation in Guadalupe County on FM 78. It was not known what type of violation had allegedly occurred, according to Trooper Deon Cockrell a DPS spokesman.

The male driver gave the trooper a false name during the stop, Cockrell said, and, as the trooper was attempting to arrest the man, a scuffle ensued.

The man was able to escape from the trooper, got back in his vehicle and fled. Cockrell said the trooper then lost sight of the suspect and that is when DPS air support responded.



A Texas state trooper was shot and killed during a traffic stop in East Texas on Thanksgiving. The agency also said it will file capital murder charges against Dabrett Black, 32, of Lindale, Texas.

A DPS helicopter spotted the suspect traveling west on Interstate 10 in Bexar County. The trooper was able to re-establish contact and chased the suspect off of the highway. The suspect then used the Graytown Road bridge to cross over I-10 and continued to travel westbound down the two-way access road, Cockrell said.

Then, according to Cockrell, the suspect used an exit to re-enter I-10, ignoring "Do Not Enter" and "Wrong Way" signs, and began traveling the wrong direction in the eastbound lanes.

At about 3:20 p.m. near Graytown Road and I-10, just before Loop 1604, the trooper was able to stop the suspect by using his patrol vehicle as a barrier.

"Once that trooper stopped the vehicle, the suspect engaged the trooper and gunfire was exchanged between the DPS trooper and the suspect," Cockrell said.

Cockrell added that two troopers were at the scene but only one fired at the suspect.

Multiple times during the incident scanner chatter reported the trooper was hit in the arm and the suspect in the abdomen. Cockrell was not able to confirm this information.

There has been no update on the conditions of the trooper or the suspect, neither of whom have been identified.

The trooper was transported by AirLife to University Hospital, according to the hospital. The suspect was also flown to a local hospital, Cockrell said.

During the incident, traffic was backed up while officials launched an investigation at the scene.
