Galveston College sets student success workshops

Galveston, Texas – Galveston College will host a series of student success workshops during the spring 2018 semester at the Charlie Thomas Family Applied Technology Center, 7626 Broadway Blvd., Galveston, Texas.

Financial Aid Day is set for Tuesday, Jan. 30, in ATC 300. Current and prospective students can receive hands-on assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In addition, there will be presentations on financial aid, scholarships, and college programs and services.

Participants and their family members are encouraged to bring copies of their 2016 and 2017 tax returns to Financial Aid Day. Those who do not have tax returns will be shown major steps and how to save and retrieve the FAFSA document once tax returns have been filed.

“In order to help further prepare our students to successfully complete their degrees and secure careers in their chosen fields, the Galveston College Applied Technology Center offers success workshops to provide additional training on soft skills and non-academic lessons,” said Amanda Smithson, student success advisor. “Focused on life skills and job-search topics, the sessions are free and last only 30 minutes.”

Student success workshops are as follows:

“Taking the Terror Out of the TSI”

Tuesday, Feb. 6, 10-10:30 a.m., ATC 300

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college. This workshop will provide current and prospective students with information on the TSI assessment, preparation and test-taking strategies, and academic advising.

“Safe Spring Break”

Thursday, March 8, 10-10:30 a.m., ATC 300

The workshop will focus on ways to stay safe and in control during a spring-break trip and still have a great time.

“Dress for Success”

Tuesday, March 27, 10-10:30 a.m., ATC 300

First impressions are critical and an interview goer must make every effort to dress properly for the position for which he or she is interviewing. This workshop will give the potential applicant knowledge of what is appropriate attire; what to wear and what not to wear.

Mock Interview Day
Friday, April 6

Looking for a way to improve your interviewing skills? Participating students will be given a one-on-one mock interview with local industry leaders and Galveston College staff who will give personalized feedback about interviewing skills.

“Professionalism 101”

Monday, April 23, 10 – 10:30 a.m.

ATC 300

This workshop focuses on the components of business image, including professional dress, networking with business professionals, etiquette and communication.
