A man who was convicted a generation ago of attempting to kill two university police officers is heading back to prison to serve a 30-year sentence after being  convicted this week of threatening to kill a family, prosecutors said Thursday.

Steven Kurt Baughman,57, was convicted of two charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm following a three-day trial that ended Wednesday.

During a 2014 incident he pressed a handgun into the head of a Spring woman and threatened to kill her. He also threatened to kill her child.

Baughman also later shot at the family.

“When a convicted felon with a substantial criminal history pistol whips a woman, threatens her life and her family,  the people of Harris County deliver justice,” Harris County Assistant District Attorney Steven Belt said.

Baughman was previously convicted of trying to kill two University of Houston Downtown Police officers in 1989. He shot one of them  in the head and hand, losing three fingers. He shot the other in the armpit.

Baughman was sentenced to 50 years and released in 2008. He was on parole at the time of the 2014 incident.

First Assistant District Attorney Tom Berg said that Baughman should never again be free.

“A 50-year prison sentence in the last century evidently was not enough to reform or deter Mr. Baughman. One hopes that the 30-year sentence conferred by the court after the jury’s verdict will suffice to spare the good people of Harris County any further encounters with him in this one.”

The case was investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Precinct 4 Constables Office.
