A 70-year-old man has been arrested in the death of an Alice Police Department officer in 1974.
The man was arrested Nov. 8 in Alabama and charged with capital
murder in the Dec. 1, 1974 shooting death of Matthew Murphy, according
to the Alice Echo News Journal. Alice is roughly 43 miles west of Corpus Christi.
The suspect was identified as Roberto Lopez Sunday by KIII TV. According to both news sources, Lopez had been a person of interest from the beginning of the investigation.
Murphy was killed after stopping a vehicle at West Main Street and Highway 281 in Alice, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) wrote.
"Several minutes after the initial stop, another officer found
Murphy suffering from gunshot wounds. Murphy was transported to a local
hospital where he later died," DPS added. "Witnesses described a
two-door car leaving the area of the shooting, and it is believed the
vehicle was occupied by more than one individual. Responding officers
were unable to locate the vehicle after it left the scene."
