Firearms Instructor, Refuse To Be A Victim Instructor

If a member of the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas had been armed, just maybe there would have been less loss of life. But just maybe that armed member of the congregation would also be a victim.

Following is a true story.

A state representative was walking home after a late-night meeting accompanied by a fellow legislator when they were accosted by an individual holding a 9MM pistol and demanding they give up their wallets.

When the robber turned his firearm toward the friend the S.L. reached behind and pulled a 380 Bodyguard out from his holster and from 7 feet fired two shots at the robber, AND MISSED.

The robber started to run away, realized he also had a gun, turned and fired 2 shots at the two people, and also missed. I called the S.L. and asked him why he missed? He said it was the adrenaline, and I said B==L C==P.

I said, “You went to the gun store, the clerk told you everything he knew about the handgun you purchased, with 2 boxes of ammo. You went to the range, fired one box, took the 2nd box home for loading, and thought you would be Michael The Arch Angle and would slay the dragon when the time arrived.

But, you became Barney Fife, and no one respected him! I asked the S.L. to come to my range for a lesson in how to protect yourself in a gun fight. He did, and if anyone ever attempts to rob this state legislator, he will not miss AGAIN!

The entire point of this article is that arming the congregation without proper training is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. I don’t care where you get the training, but get trained.

A real life gun fight is not like shooting at the 25 yard line, and one mistake can and will cost you your life.

Hummm, getting training is one thg but staying practice is another. This situation is not everyday life for the average..

Training is not rocket science and just like gun safety should be taught. We are missing the concept here that the mere presence of a gun many times deters criminals. I'm an instructor, retired LEO and have been there and done that. I don't discourage people that want to arm themselves. Just encourage them to get training and practice a little, frequently.

I know for a fact that there are Churches that have both Uniformed and Plain Clothes LE Officers and some have private security for protection. It's baffling for most to wonder where our society is heading.I agree that the proper training is essential to handle a firearm and stress safety!
