Houston police searched for hours, but were unable to find the driver part of a band or robbers who caused chaos in Midtown and Montrose late Wednesday night, investigators said.

Just after 11:30 p.m. there were two reports of armed robberies in the Montrose area, Lt. Larry Crowson said.

He said at one of those scenes there were reports of a woman and three men robbing people at gunpoint in a nightclub parking lot near Westheimer Road and Montrose Boulevard.

They were using a  silver Dodge SUV as a getaway vehicle, HPD said.

"An officer working an extra job was in the area and responded and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle," Crowson said.

But detectives said the driver refused to stop and led the off-duty officer on a chase which lasted more than a mile.

"At some point, one of the occupants leaned out of the vehicle and fired several shots at the (officer's ) vehicle.  One of the shots glanced off the roof of the vehicle," Crowson said.

While those shots were being fired, investigators had no idea there were two 1-year-old babies in the back seat, he said.

Police said the driver finally pulled over off Webster and Brazos in Midtown.

They said the shooter jumped out and ran from the scene.

Crowson said bloodhounds were brought in to track the driver, but they lost his scent at the MetroRail station at Ennis Street and Main Street.

Police said they were able to detain the other three adults in the car.  The babies were also taken into protective custody.

Police said they found stolen cellphones and wallets inside the getaway vehicle.

No one was hurt.
