Attempted Capital Murder of a Lytle Police Officer

On Monday night at approx. 6:07 pm Sgt. Mark Montgomery initiated a traffic stop on a white Lexus on Somerset St. (near the wave zone).

The vehicle had no front license plate (LP), the rear LP appeared altered and the vehicle was speeding approx 10 miles above the posted limit (40 in a 30).

An in car computer check also revealed the LP on the vehicle didn’t belong on the Lexus. Once Sgt. Montgomery got out of his patrol unit the Lexus sped off.

Montgomery initiated a pursuit, the suspect vehicle headed across Main St. and turned North on Adams St. The suspect vehicle realized that the northern end of Adams St. was a dead end and spun around and headed back south.

Montgomery, fearing they would ram him, pulled onto the railroad right of way. As the suspect vehicle came close to Sgt. Montgomery it appears that a total of 4-5 shots were fired at him.

One did hit the lower rocker panel of the patrol unit (below the driver’s door). The officer then attempted to pursue them but was cancelled by Lt. Dear (who was at the railroad tracks and McDonald St. and observed the incident) due to the speed of the suspect vehicle and the residential / park area.

This case is under investigation. Sgt. Montgomery was not injured.

Authority: Richey Priest, Chief of Police
