JAMAICA BEACH, Texas - The expected appointment of a Police Chief for the City of Jamaica Beach was delayed Monday, when the candidate selected to be appointed withdrew himself from consideration.
City Administrator John Brick was set to recommend the appointment of Interim Chief Richard Sedgewick to the fulltime position but Sedgewick withdrew hours before the council convened it's 6 o'clock meeting.
Sedgewick's withdrawal came as a surprise to residents at the meeting and to some council members as well. Brick said Sedgewick came to him just hours before and withdrew. Brick did not say why he did.
Rather than offer the position to one of the other three candidates on the list, Brick said the city would start all over by advertising the position and interviewing applicants again.
The city came under fire from several residents over the way the selection process was handled, leading to speculation the city will try to do it by-the-book this time.
During this last selection the city advertised only with a small ad in the local newspaper, attracting less than 20 applicants. Typically these positions are listed with the Texas Municpal League and advertised in law enforcement publications, which Jamaica Beach has done in previous years. The last time, when it followed that procedure, it received over 40 applications.
There was also considerable critisizm over the makeup of the selection committee who interviews the candidates and narrows the list to the final one who will be presented to the city council by the city administrator. The four member committee, this time, consisted of the Mayor, City Administrator, and two community activists. There was no representative from the law enforcement community which is typically always done by inviting a neighboring police chief.
Interium Chief Sedgewick just got married over the weekend and only hours later his new father-in-law passed away, so he was not available at Monday nights meeting to discuss his decision to withdraw from consideration.
The Police News will follow this new selection process closely and report on it's progress.
