JAMAICA BEACH - Rescue personnel responded to yet another near-drowning this afternoon in the seaside village of Jamaica Beach on west Galveston island.

Two men set out to fish from a Kayak but before they even got a hook in the water, their Kayak overturned dumping them both in the Gulf waters about 350 yards offshore.

Jacob Grant, 27, of Dickinson and Mark Pelc, 23, of Pearland told Galveston Beach Patrol Lifeguard Brandon Venegas when their Kayak overturned they both struggled to keep each other afloat and cling to the boat.  However, Grant said the Kayak filled with water and disappeared leaving him, without a life jacket, struggling in the water.  Pelc, who was wearing a life jacket fought furiously to swim Grant to shore but the tide was against him.  He went on to shore alone to call for help.

"I thought my best friend was dead," an emotional Pelc said.

A force of first responders answered the call including Jamaica Beach Fire and Rescue, the Galveston Beach Patrol, Galveston Fire Department and Jamaica Beach Police.

Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis and a Jamaica Beach firefighter rescued Grant from the water in time and took him ashore.

Both men were treated for salt water ingestion by Galveston EMS personnel.

Comments:
I guess it takes all kinds. The waters on the beach front were/are not that calm today that it would dictate a kayak trip into the gulf!!!

4 to 6 foot rollers coming in and they take a kayak out?? hope they learned a lesson from this!!!! Winds and water is nothing to mess around with!!

@Floundering:

One of those gentlemen was my husband. Obviously I wish they would have made a wiser decision than to go out, but on the flip side I'm glad they're okay.

Instead of being high and mighty about it, why don't you help me and our friend's wife celebrate the fact that neither of them became a statistic today. And yes, I guess it does take all kinds... Of comment board trolls.

Would you still be making these comments if one of them were dead? Some people...
Posted by Bleck at 5/26/2013 10:46:49 PM

Your first 2 sentences say it all, nuff said. You be happy they made it back in and hope they never do it again in 20+ mile an hr winds!!

Bleck, probably not. It is obvious that they should of known better but took a chance and almost paid for it with their life and there is no fishes out there worth anyone's life, just sayin!! Poor decisions have poor endings!!

This happened right in front of our beach house we were on the beach as the first lifeguard pulled up directly in front of us. It was awesome to see these guys at work!!! I am glad that both men were ok!!! The look on the mans face that was rescued was that of true gratitude!!!! What was even more amazing was to see all the people on the beach lend a helping hand to recover these guys kayak and other belongings that washed up!!! Good job first responders on ur hard work!!! And Gob Bless all involved yesterday!!!!!

floundering is just telling the truth!!it needs to be said.people drowned at the pass and it occurs over and over.DON'T wade the pass!!Taking a kayak in to surf in high winds is ridiculous! People capsize in small boats and get swamped all the time Sometimes it is fatal!! The wrong boat, in the wrong place @ the wrong time.People get on plane and run wide open in areas where they don't know the depth or where the reefs are. They get throwed out of the boat. All these people use up resources we need to conserve. $$$ Learn about the water, and respect it.these two men dissed the gulf and got lucky. Might not happen next time.

Being the wife of one of the fisherman involved feel as though these comments were not only insensitive but disheartening, rude, ignorant and just plain mean. If it were one of your loved ones would you make the same comments as stated?? I think not.. So, I would appreciate if you just would not leave your negative comments here. I think we should be thankful and extremely grateful that these 2 men made it out alive. No other reason!! Have a blessed day!!

I will not post on this again. Nothing ignorant about the info I provided. If a family member did something like this their would be a major a-- chewing. My concern is not sensitivity but hoping it does not happen again.
