GALVESTON COUNTY - Another Republican Candidate for the office of Sheriff of Galveston County which is being vacated in 2012 by Sheriff Freddie Poor, is another veteran Texas peace officer, Bill Young.

Bill Young and I visited Tuesday, again in the 61st Street Diner in Galveston, and we talked about why Bill Young is running for Sheriff and what he has planned for the job if he is successful in winning the office.

County has the use of credit card for payments.

Very Impressive! Everyone treated fairly.. Civil Service will make a career dept.and illimanate the "Good O'le Boy System" Finally a Candidate with a true vision of making positive changes that will benefit the CITIZENS,and ALL EMPLOYEES, not just a chosen few. J.P. warrant (revenue collection) is a GREAT IDEA! We defenitly need to be working better with the other Police Depts. BILL YOUNG has my VOTE!

Pam Matranga, If the county has a credit Card system,The Patrol and Traffic deputies don't have access to it.. Good Idea Mr. Young.

I like how this guy is positive and he has more signs out (in premiere locations) than any of the other candidates - he's everywhere and really knows how to work a room - So clearly he knows how to campaign. I did not know who he was at first but now that I know him - I like him. I also like the idea that he is bipartisan. Although an elected position - it's really an office where politics should play no part since there are too many mandates from the state. It is true that he has not reached out to the republican party leadership for support? That should tell them what kind of message they are relaying to the other candidates.
I find it hard to believe that a GC deputy would comment on civil service as the typical consensus now is that the current sheriff has worked very hard with trying to build up the presence of the deputies' association because he believes in police unions and makes no secret about it.
People who point blame to the good ol' boy system as an excuse are usually the odd man out. Understand that civil service would even dictate the odd man out be qualified too.
It's great that Young has the civil service mentality - hopefully he maintains that when he chooses a command staff if elected. I have heard that candidates plan to keep the current 'aces' in their places except for a few.

I think this man ( Bill Young ) Will be the next Sheriff of Galveston County. Great interview well spoken. But there are a few things I question about all the candidates you all talk the talk but can you walk the walk. I have a few more months before I vote But I,m looking at Bill Young right now. good luck Bill see you at the poles.

Finally got to listen to all of the interview with Bill Young. Definitely the most articulate of the bunch that have been on here. Very impressive and I'll tell you that he's turning heads of some very in the know people. I can tell by the tone that this guy will succeed if elected to the position because he shows people dignity and at the end of the day that is what matters most. There are some things like charging inmates copay that I know for a fact will not fly but he's the first one of these guys that's not pandering to a party in his platform and I respect that immensely. Excellent interview Breck - Excellent! I will be voting for Bill Young -irony is he's the one candidate that I don't personally know at all. This interview and a few other things that I've learned about him changed my mind. He doesn't have the baggage that comes with working on the SO before and feeling tied down by "this is how we've done it" but seems to have the rationale to get in and learn the rules handed down. He knows that this office will be handed to him in very good condition and will take it north from there. Alot of folks felt energized by this interview.

Posted by see it - say it at 11/23/2011 7:52:32 PM

I see Bill Young (In Person) every where, talking to people,He never passes a uniform officer/deputy without stopping and talking,He is taking input from all walks of life in this county. By the way he is running his campaign it is obvious he is a Very HARD WORKER. This tells me he has worked hard all his life and he will work hard as Galveston County's next Sheriff! He's not a "MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY" kinda guy.......... Will be a great loss for this county if BILL YOUNG is not our next Sheriff!

Posted by Law 2223 at 11/24/2011 8:20:09 AM

see it say it, you must be Mr. Young’s campaign manager? You should really do some research on your candidate. Remember, a lot of people were thinking like you are when Obama and a lot of other people where elected in this county. And ya see where that got us! Mr. Young spoke well but does that really make him qualified for sheriff. He has also said he would keep a lot of the upper ranks cause he don't have a clue how to run the Sheriff’s Office.

Posted by get it right at 11/24/2011 9:37:08 AM

Really a helicopter... where will that money come from? good speaker, probably learned that from doing all those interviews while jumping around from Department to Department. Been in Law Enforcement since 1979 and can't decide on full or part time most of his career. I've seen him in public and have not been impressed with his people skills. He's not friendly. I agree with get it right, keeping the upper ranks cause he doesn't have a clue how to run the Sheriff's Office..

Posted by bobby at 11/24/2011 10:13:11 AM

get it right,,got it wrong!.Im qualified enough to use my own name on here and to remind the readers that during my interview Brecks teleprompter was unavailable so I did not have the benefit of one as did President Obama lol.. also readers remember that A candidate who allows staffers to smear and misquote others won't stop this kind of behavior once they become sheriff. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all.

Posted by Bill Young at 11/24/2011 11:58:35 AM

Mr.Young NEVER said he was going to keep the current cammand staff. He's a fair man, He said he will evaluate their past and present performance first. They made their own beds now they will have to sleep in them. WE NEED A REAL CHANGE. 80 years of "Thats how we have always done it" is long enough! Still waiting to hear the other candidates interview to decide,But I'm thinking Bill Youngs interview and ideas will be hard to beat.

I heard the interview and I felt like he knew what he was talking about especially about the warrants. How come these JP warrants are allowed to go uncollected? Regarding the problems with the illegals. WOW what a simple fix. guy makes sense to me. He shops at the Kroger in League City and always has been one of our favorite customers even before he said he was running.

Posted by trainer at 11/24/2011 1:08:18 PM

Sounds like a nice guy. The JP warrants are not going uncollected. The JP warrants are complex due to Court mandates beyond the control of the JP courts and Sheriff. In many states Class C warrants are now civil matters due 2 restrictions from higher courts. This myth that money is just sitting on the table is untrue. Most of the uncollected paper is out of county violators and FTA's. Basically they are people who should have been hooked up but due to the amount of time to process or higher priority call loads were written tickets. FTA database is bringing good revenue in. Wish the candidates would research this issue a little more before they make uninformed comments. I work JP warrants and if allowed would love 2 show what we do. Always looking for better ways to get the job done.

Thank you for doing this interview. Bill Young now has my vote.

Posted by Refounder at 11/25/2011 9:18:07 AM

If you want to know more about Mr.Young go to his facebook and have all your friends become friends of Bills. You will understand his platform and ideas. I have learned alot about him in the last few months, and became a friend of his. I think he will be a GREAT Sheriff and Peace Keeper. keep up the good work Bill I'm behind you all the way.

Id like to express my support for Mr Bill Young For Galveston County Sheriff. Seems like he has some very pro-active ideas. Is about time someone thought about implementing programs that will try to get ahead of the crime problems, instead of waiting for a problem to arise and then playing caught up. Listening to Mr Bill Young's interview where he suggested the JP Criminal Warrants be placed with the other criminal computerized warrants, shows he is concerned about he welfare of the officers and the residences of Galveston County. Being involved in the law enforcement professional over 30 years, currently assigned to criminal warrants and traveling to several different county's, I definitely know importance of having wanted information readily available in patrol units computers and dispatch centers. Without this information it can place an officer and citizens lives in jeopardy.

I'd like to correct a statement made by a previous commenter - the statement is NOT Accurate: they wrote:"In many states Class "C" warrants are now considered a civil matter". What state might that be? Certainly not TEXAS. Class "C" Warrant's are NOT considered a CIVIL matter. If you have an outstanding warrant for your arrest - you are subject to arrest and jail time. MOST Civil Matters are NOT subject to arrest.

The State of TEXAS and all the law enforcement departments in the greater Houston/Harris - Galveston - Liberty - Ft Bend - Brazoria -and - Montgomery Counties - Considered Class "C" warrant(s) a CRIMINAL Offense and not a Civil Matter.

Mr Bill Young's information is right on target and accurate. In defensive of the JP warrant officer, most JP Courts in Galveston County only execute civil papers and Not warrants on wanted people. Its possible the JP warrant officer that made the comment is limited by his office and unable to enforce criminal warrants. If you work for a criminal warrant division/police agency you should have access to check people from your in car computer or by dispatch 24 hours a day, not from a pile of papers on you cars dashboard or office desk.

Even if the JP funding does not allow Criminal Warrants be placed in the Local Region DPS Computer System, the wanted information should be accessible any time, by any law enforcement agency in the county. Most of us in the law enforcement community will agree we can all benefit from programs that will make our job safer and more efficient. I'm all for a safer and more productive Sheriff's Department, and will endorse Mr Bill Young for Sheriff of Galveston County. Good Luck Sir.

I believe Mr. Young will be a great leader and I hope he gets elected because we need some changes especially getting rid of that good ole boy system

LOl.. I assure you I'm not Maddog, But I do comment on here as you do. And I do know Bill Young is a Honest, hard working man that will make a Great Sheriff.

Posted by Ross McCammon at 12/4/2011 8:03:34 AM

What are your exact qualification? How many years (exactly) do you have in full time law enforcement with an agency that compares to the Galveston County Sheriff's Office? How much part time do you have with the same size agency? How many people have you commanded in law enforcement at one time and for how many years? What kind of law eenforcement training do you have (FBI National Academy, etc...)? We need to know more about you.

Posted by NO BS at 12/11/2011 3:51:01 PM

I am a retired Houston Police Officer, and I have known Bill Young for about 30 years. What you hear on the interview is what you get.. He had good managerial skills, and solid business and budgetary experience as well. Yes he worked in several different departments, both full and part-time, as he had also run his own private business as well. Where will the money come from for a Helicopter? Actually, there is still plenty of Federal Grant monies out there. What is needed is a good grant writer. Trained LE Pilots, there are probably a dozen from HPD that would come down just for the pure joy of getting back in a ship.. I can be done..The warrant fix, a no dollar, no brainer, easily done. I think he just might pull it off.. He has always been a charger, one not to back down from challenge.. I wish him luck. He's a good fair man...

Posted by Bob Bryce at 12/11/2011 10:03:01 PM

I'm sure he is a great honest, good hearted guy, but that does not make him qualified to run a 30 plus million dollar budget. Give me exact work history (Agency, Position held, how many people did he manage, how long at each agency, was it full time, part time, education, what type of business did he have etc...). There are many people in Galveston county that are good hearted GREAT people with experience in business and have worked part-time and full-time in law enforcement that still do not have the qualifications needed to be Sheriff of a county with nearly 300 million people and 450 plus officers. Sorry, it does not add up....In regards to the helicopters, I am tired of the federal gov paying local bills and that is where grants come from. Grants are paid with tax money, so it does not matter if we take it out of our federal tax base or local tax base it all comes from OUR pockets.

Posted by NO BS at 12/12/2011 3:50:18 PM

I thought I may have a response from someone who could answer these questions.
