GALVESTON - Picket lines were back up at Gate 38 at the Port of Galveston this morning as union longshoremen continued their protest of a local stevedoring company which brought in non-union labor to unload a ship.

The Johanna C, a ship registered in the United Kingdom and offloading Mexican steel, began unloading yesterday morning.  The Sullivan Stevedoring Co. of Galveston contracted for unloading the vessel and hired non-union labor to do it.

Trucks loaded with the heavy, plate steel were leaving the docks under police escort.  Police took each truck under escort from the dock, through the picket lines on Port Industrial Blvd, and on to the Gulf Freeway where they continued on to Houston alone.

The Police News was at the Galveston docks this morning for the story.
