A WEEK DEDICATED TO HONOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

By: Linda Telfah
Chief of the Victim Assistance Unit

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. This annual observance is to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and have given their lives in the line of duty. Ceremonies held during this week are a poignant expression of appreciation and gratitude to honor fallen officers whose end of watch occurred in service to their communities.

Tragically, there has been a wave of attacks on police officers in this country. In 2017, 128 police officers died in the line of duty, with 44 of them were shot and killed.  143 officers died in the line of duty in 2016, with 66 of them being shot and killed.  And so far in 2018, 48 officers have died in the line of duty nationwide, with over half of the deaths resulting from shootings.

Police officers give selflessly of themselves in the line of duty, demonstrating courage, professionalism and fearlessness in very dangerous situations. Their aim is to protect and serve, uphold justice, and make our communities a safer place to live. These dedicated men and women who put their lives on the line every day deserve our respect and heartfelt appreciation for what they do for citizens every day.

National Police Week, May 13 through May 19, and Peace Officers Memorial Day held on May 15, gives us the opportunity to pause and to honor these brave law enforcement officers and to reflect on their commitment to protecting and serving our communities.
