Nature of Incident: Arrest - Cruelty to Non-livestock Animal

Date of Incident: January 4, 2018

Jeremy Dewayne Burton, 25 year old male, arrested and charged with cruelty to non livestock animal, a state jail felony.
Thursday, January 4, 2018, at about 2:30 am, Dickinson PD received a call in the 3100 block of Ohio Ave of a male subject in the street who was harming a dog. Officers arrived and found Burton walking a dog (adult pit-bull) in the street. Officers noticed the dog had a laceration on the head, was cowering, and barely able to walk. Witnesses reported seeing Burton punching the dog in the head, kicking the dog, and swinging the dog into the air by a belt tied around the dog’s neck and slamming the dog to the ground. Burton had taken the dog from a yard of a nearby residence. Burton told officers he was stressed out and angry and was taking his frustration out on the dog.
The dog was released back to the owner at the scene.
Burton was arrested at the scene. The case was reviewed with the Galveston County
District Attorney’s Office. A charge of cruelty to non-livestock animal, state jail felony, was accepted. Bond was set at $60,000.00.

Sergeant / Public Information Officer

Comments:
This guy is an idiot and I hope he stays in jail for awhile. I wish he punched in the head and he can see how it feels. I feel so bad for the dog.

It's not his fault - It is a learned behavior. He was probably raised with the same type of abuse. Smacked around his whole life by his parents as a child so he probably thinks it's an act of endearment.
