Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Monday that more than $4 million in grants, awarded by the State of Texas, will be used to help victims of violent crime and to combat sex trafficking.

“Violent criminals toss victims into the criminal justice system without regard to the harm they are inflicting,” Ogg said. “It is traumatic, stressful and confusing.”

Twenty-First Century prosecution requires not only going after perpetrators, but supporting victims with an array of important services, she said.

The money, drawn from four recently awarded grants, comes from the Texas Governor’s Criminal Justice Division and be used over the next two years. Ogg praised the cooperative effort with the State of Texas to fight crime in Harris County.

“It is vital that state and local governments work together on major crimes issues,” Ogg said. “We appreciate this financial support, which will accelerate crime-fighting efforts.”

Andrea Sparks, director of the Texas Governor’s Child Sex Trafficking Team, lauded the cooperation. “The Governor’s Office is committed not only to bringing justice to those who exploit our young Texans, but also providing the trauma-informed services survivors of sexual exploitation need to heal.”

“This partnership will be big step toward achieving both of these goals in Harris County,” she said.
