GRAPEVINE, Texas - A Miami-Dade police officer was stabbed Monday night by a prisoner he was transporting across state lines.
The officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was taking Alberto Morales to Las Vegas, Nevada, with another officer. The group had an overnight layover at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and made a stop at a nearby Walmart store.
According to local police, when one officer went inside, Morales stabbed the officer who was still in the car four times and ran away. Authorities say he stabbed the officer in the back and chest.
A search is now underway for Morales. Police there say they are looking for him near train tracks in Grapevine, Texas. An alert has been issued for all nearby communities to look for the suspect, who is likely still in shackles.
The officer is in critical, but stable condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. It is still unclear what type of weapon was used in the stabbing.
According to the Miami-Dade County jail records, Morales has been charged with five counts of sexual battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of kidnapping with a weapon, and armed burglary.
