Over the past 15 years, police in Texas have ensnared thousands of criminals who thought they were home free in a high-tech net woven from countless strands of DNA left at murders, rapes, burglaries and robberies.
In just the past year, matches to the FBI's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) have nearly doubled statewide, from about 1,000 in 2011 to 1,943 in 2012. Locally, the Jefferson County Regional Crime Lab reported a similar increase, from 35 in 2011 to 58 last year, said director Linda Johnson.
