A Florida Department of Corrections officer was killed in the line of duty on Monday afternoon.

Coconut Creek, FL – Florida Department of Corrections Officer Tawanna Marin was killed in the line of duty on Monday, when she was struck by a passing motorist.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. near the intersection of West Sample Road and Lyons Road, Margate-Coconut Creek Fire and Rescue representative Jeff Gary told the Sun Sentinel.

Officer Marin, 48, was supervising a crew of inmates who were working for the Florida Department of Transportation and was positioned behind one of the state’s dump trucks when a Nissan Maxima crashed into her, according to WPLG.

Officer Marin was pinned between the Maxima and the dump truck as a result of the collision and had to be extricated from the wreckage.

Paramedics rushed the injured officer to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, where she was pronounced dead, the Sun Sentinel reported.

The motorist who crashed into the correctional officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a local hospital, according to WPLG.

It was unclear whether charges would be filed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Officer Marin, who joined the Department of Corrections in 2009, was stationed at the South Florida Reception Center in Doral, the Sun Sentinel reported.

“We are absolutely devastated by the tragic passing of Officer Tawanna Marin,” Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones said in a Facebook post. “For more than nine years, Officer Marin served our state as a corrections officer, and we are forever grateful for her sacrifice and service to our community. Our deepest condolences go out to her loved ones and fellow officers during this extremely difficult time.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Florida Department of Corrections Officer Tawanna Marin, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Officer Tawanna Marin, your life mattered.
