PRESS RELEASE

At approximately  5:15 am, Deputies from the Galveston Sheriffs Office were notified of an Aggravated Robbery/ Car Jacking in Texas City. A white Kia Soul was taken during the commission of this offense, and they immediately set up to watch for the vehicle. Soon thereafter, a Sheriff’s Office Sergeant observed a vehicle matching the description traveling north on State Highway 3 in Dickinson. He then pulled in behind the vehicle and verified the license plate as the stolen vehicle. He initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of SH3 and FM 517, when the actor refused to yield and fled in the stolen vehicle.

A pursuit of the vehicle led through the streets of Dickinson, and back into Texas City, where the County units were joined by Texas City Police Department. After attempting to elude  law enforcement into a neighborhood, the suspect then fled on foot, leaving the vehicle in drive and unoccupied. The vehicle careened out of control and struck two unoccpied vehicles parked in a driveway, one of which was a Galveston County Sheriff’s unit.

The suspect was captured near the scene a short time later. He is identified as 35 year old Asian male, Quang Van Mai. He was booked into the Galveston County Jail with bonds totaling $120,000 for UUMV and Felony Evading in a Vehicle. Aggravated Robbery charges are still pending with the Texas City Police Department. There were no known injuries associated with this event. The value of damage to property is not yet known.
