FORT WORTH, Texas- Sixth Graders Help Catch Burglary Suspect

On March 29, Officer Kelm and Officer Stephens responded to a suspicious person call in the 3500 block of Pecos St.  The officers realized they had arrived to the location the day before with the same suspect description and decided to approach the location from a different direction, not wanting the suspect to see them.  The officers were within three blocks of Pecos Street when they observed a vehicle being driven by a male matching the description of their previous call, traveling in the opposite direction.

Officer Kelm and Officer Stephens turned their police car around and observed the suspect pull into a residential driveway.  The officers pulled in behind the vehicle and the driver immediately stepped out and ran away from the officers.  Air One was dispatched and additional Fort Worth police units patrolled the area, looking for the suspect.  Air One and the additional units were able to contain the suspect in a general area; officers received updated information as to the last known location of the suspect.

Officer Cox was searching the area when he noticed three elementary aged boys waving their arms in the air, desperately trying to get his attention.  The three youngsters ran down the street toward Officer Cox and asked him if police were looking for someone.  The boys explained that a Hispanic male wearing a white t-shirt offered each of them $20 to help him hide (they obviously turned him down).

The boys told Officer Cox the man ran down the street, away from them, with the street location identified as the 3000 block of Lomita.  Officer Cox immediately updated the officers with the Lomita location and Air One remained overhead, with the intent to keep containment within the area.

Officers responded to the Lomita area and located the suspect inside a house, which was being renovated.  The front door was open and two men were inside laying tile with the radio on, not knowing the suspect entered the house and hid in a closet.

The suspect's vehicle was taken and several items were recovered and returned to its owners.  The suspect was arrested for Burglary of a Habitation and Evading arrest.

As a thank you and appreciation to the boys who helped bring the suspect to custody, they were each provided bicycles and were donated helmets!  Additionally, the boys were provided Coins and Certificates of Appreciation, which were signed by Captain Alldredge and Chief Fitzgerald.

Officers will be presenting the young men (Trevontae Barker, Kenyon Maloney, David Willis) their bicycles and Certificates on April 20, at 4:00 p.m., at Glencrest Middle School, 4801 Eastline Drive.

All because three young men decided to do the right thing.
