HOUSTON -- Houston police are searching in response to a report saying a mother might have dumped her baby in the trash.

Homicide detectives are combing a southwest Houston home on Tambourine near Keegan where it appears a woman gave birth while attempting to perform an abortion. Police say the woman told hospital staff that she delivered the baby in that home a couple of days ago, then wrapped it in a blanket and left it in a dumpster outside an apartment complex in northeast Houston where she used to live.
