A man has been charged with retaliation after he was accused of threatening to kill a local judge, according to an arrest affidavit.

Shawn Erik Haugen, 26, was in Travis County jail on Monday on $100,000 bail, according to jail records.

On Friday, Austin police officers had been assigned to protect a local judge against Haugen after Haugen threatened the justice, according to the affidavit. Police said in the affidavit that the judge reported that he had recently "rendered a rare ruling" that took away Haugen's ability to act on his own behalf in legal matters because of his severe schizophrenia.

On Saturday, the judge said he received a call from Haugen's public defender. The attorney told the judge that Haugen had left her an alarming voice mail, the affidavit stated. In the message, Haugen ranted, mentioning the judge's name, home address and home phone number. Haugen said that he was going to kill the judge, according to the affidavit.

Police said in the affidavit that the judge and his wife were extremely fearful and that his wife took family members to stay at a hotel. His wife would not provide a location to detectives over the phone for fear that it might be Haugen or a friend.

Haugen was later arrested at his residence.
