Police looking for people who might have seen two men who tried to rob a senior citizen couple at gunpoint found a witness in their own ranks.

Lake Jackson police have released a video showing the two men walking through a parking lot from a patrol car’s dash-mounted camera Tuesday afternoon, about 30 minutes before the robbery attempt in the 100 block of Highway 332 West, Assistant Police Chief Paul Kibodeax said.

“He was driving through the parking lot and he thought they were a little suspicious,” Kibodeaux said of the officer. “He did slow up thinking these two guys look a little bit out of place.”

The patrol officer remembered the incident after reading witness accounts stating one of the men was wearing bright green socks or shoes, Kibodeaux said.

“It was just after the fact he thought, ‘I think I may have seen these guys,’” he said. “That is a cop’s intuition.”

The video shows two black men walking toward the business parking lot where the robbery attempt happened. One man wore a white shirt, dark shorts and tall white socks; the other man wore tall, bright green socks, light shorts and a dark shirt, and had dreadlocks with blonde highlights.

Both men appear to be in their late teens or early 20s, Lt. Bryan Sidebottom said Wednesday.

The two men would face felony robbery charges if they are convicted of trying to rob a couple in their 80s about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Chief Rick Park said.

According to witnesses, the man with dreadlocks was in the back seat of the couple’s car when they returned from shopping, Sidebottom said.

A second man wearing a red bandana outside the vehicle approached the passenger-side door and pointed a gun at the husband’s chest, Park said.

The woman struggled to get out of the car, but before she did, the man in the backseat reached around to cover her mouth and she bit him in the hand, Park said. The man with dreadlocks should have a bite mark on his hand as an identifier.

The woman’s shouts began attracting attention from others in the parking lot, Park said. Both men then got in a black Ford Taurus and drove north on Highway 288 toward Angleton.

The vehicle was found by the Angleton Police Department in the 700 block of Western Avenue shortly after, Sidebottom said.

The elderly man was treated at the scene with cuts on his face, but the couple asked not be identified, Kibodeaux said.

“We’ve talked to them several times and they were good,” Kibodeaux said.

The man and woman are lucky with the way their situation worked out, but if the intentions of the gunman were to shoot, things could have turned out much differently, Kibodeaux said.

“If it’s about property — your car, your wallet — and they haven’t done anything to show you they’re going to hurt or kidnap you, those things can be replaced,” Kibodeaux said. “I’m glad it ended up the way it did.”
