Second Graders at The Shlenker School Donate New Bears for HFD Ambulances

What: Shlenker School second graders raise money annually and donate more than 100 new bears to HFD.  Bears are placed on HFD EMS units to comfort children during emergencies.  This year they are also making a donation to MEDILIFE of Houston (501c3) in honor of the 4 fallen firefighters and those injured in last year’s tragic hotel fire.

When: Thursday, March 13, 2014, 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Where: The Shlenker School, 5600 North Braeswood Blvd. Houston, Texas 77096, between Chimney Rock Road and Hillcroft
Additional Information: For more than a dozen years, the second-grade class at the Shlenker School have held read-a-thons to raise money and purchase stuffed animals from "Build-A-Bear Workshop."  Those bears are donated to HFD EMS to help console children during emergency calls.  Giving a bear to a child during an emergency call helps firefighters, EMTs and paramedics administer care and reassure children involved in an emergency that HFD is there to help. Each bear comes with a special prayer inside to help comfort the recipient.

This year the students raised enough money to make a donation in honor of the 4 fallen firefighters and those injured in the May 2013 hotel fire.  The donation will be given to MEDILIFE of Houston, a 501c3 organization which helps HFD.

An HFD fire truck will come to the school and receive the bears and the donation check.  Firefighters will thank the students for their special gifts.  This is a mitzvah or an act of kindness that these second graders are doing to help children they will likely never meet.
