LPPD investigators capture tire thief, look to clear more cases

On November 6th, 2013 detectives from the La Porte Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit were working a directed unmarked surveillance assignment in the 200 block of Barbour’s Cut Blvd. due to a string of commercial vehicle tire thefts that had been taking place at area industrial yards.  This is a trend that has been on-going for several months affecting a number of cities in the Bay Area.  At approximately 10 p.m., the undercover investigators observed a 20 ft box truck back into a dead-end drive on the north side of the roadway, with two males exiting the truck and walking to the rear of the vehicle.   Detectives then observed one of the men walk away from the area for an unknown reason, while the second male re-entered the cab of the truck and pulled onto the roadway.  Marked police units were summoned and, when the marked units arrived to check the U-Haul truck, the remaining suspect attempted to evade the officers but soon crashed into a nearby fence.  The driver of the vehicle was immediately apprehended and identified as Dominique Deshawn Jones of Houston.

The U-Haul being operated was found to be stolen out of local Harris County and was towed to the La Porte Police Department, where the vehicle was treated as a crime scene while detectives petitioned for a search warrant to investigate the contents of the box truck.  At the same time, additional investigators returned to the original area where the vehicle had pulled off the roadway and discovered a hole in a business fence where the suspects had originally made entry into an industrial complex storage yard.  Several items were found near the breeched fence line in and around a high grass area.

The Harris County Assistant District Attorney’s Office initially accepted charges against 21 year old Dominique Deshawn Jones, of Houston, for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Evading Arrest and Detention.  However, after the search warrant had been formally issued, Detectives were able to recover 16 large tires from the box truck, as well as several truck wheels, bottle jacks, and large tire tools.  Based on the vehicle’s contents, Jones was also charged with felony theft.

Investigators are currently making an active search for the second suspect and are assessing whether the pair can be linked to other similar cases.
