Generation IV Glock 17
Generation IV Glock 17
March 29, 2013

LEAGUE CITY -- League City will purchase of 125 Glock pistols with night sights for it's 111 police officers.

The officers have always been required to buy their own pistols, and the city provided ammo.

The purchase will cost the city about $116,000 including the ammo.

Officials say the purchase will save the city about $18,000 over 5 years.

Ammo for the Generation IV Glock 17 pistols is said to be less expensive than the ammo for the various firearms the officers are now carrying.

The purchase of the large quantity of ammo is to insure there is a sufficient supply on hand in case there becomes a shortage due to the high demand for the ammo in the market place.

Comments:
Spending $116,000.00 to save $18,000.00 over five years does not seem like a good reason to change.

Now, changing so that all the officers will have the same weapons and interchangeable magazines seems like a much better reason.

Agency price for a Glock 17 is $362.00. Trijicon Night Sights are at most $125.00.

$487.00 x 125 = $60875

Is League City they really buying $55K worth of ammunition? At .50 cents per round that is a 110,000 rounds of "Duty" ammunition. Almost 1K rounds per officer of "Duty" ammunition. Practice ammunition is cheaper at about .32 cents a round.

Saving money???? Not really.

Why a 9mm instead of a 40 cal?
Posted by topcat at 3/29/2013 1:58:24 PM

TopCat, League city is a people friendly community, When shot the person is more likely to survive a 9mm hit then a 40 cal.. Pro Life!!!!

So Tommy, it makes much more sense for a citizen to own a .40, as opposed to to a 9mm for home defense. That way the thugs cannot sue for you enticing them to break into your home and trying to steal your belongings. .40 it is!
Posted by YouKnowWho at 3/30/2013 9:34:30 AM

9mm is cheaper and considering that the majority of governments around the world use the 9mm round it will never be in short supply. Also the .40 has a "snappier" recoil, so the 9mm is easier to shoot.

Every things bigger in Texas!!! Except League City P.D.'s bullets.....
Posted by Texan at 3/30/2013 10:09:25 PM

Hummm it's all about money. If they live and go thru due-process, it cost the city/state mo money and it's paid for by taxes. Officers forgot the serve and protect code 20+ yrs ago. This is a mixed bag of spend'n money....

Law Enforcements not the military. it should be about the knock down power, In law enforcement you want to stop the attacker. The 40 has more stopping power then the 9 mm. kinda like jabbing someone with a pen or hitting him with a hammer...
