City of La Porte hosts groundbreaking ceremony for new Animal Adoption Center and Shelter

Representatives break ground for La Porte’s new

Animal Adoption Center and Shelter

On October 28th, 2013 dignitaries from the City of La Porte joined various community members and other area residents in the official groundbreaking ceremony for La Porte’s new Animal Adoption Center and Shelter.  Ceremonies at the shelter’s designated future site were attended by many enthusiastic spectators, including La Porte’s own Mayor and several City Council members.  The official event marks a new chapter for pet and animal services in the City.  The new facility will be located at 10901 Spencer Highway and should be up and running by this time next year.  It will be approximately 4300 square feet in size, replacing the 1900 square foot animal shelter that was constructed in 1987.

The La Porte-Bayshore community has grown to the extent that the need for a new facility had become abundantly clear.  For that reason, amid the 2012-2013 Budget, the La Porte City Council approved the building of the new Adoption Center and Animal Control facility.  The new site along Spencer Highway was ultimately chosen for its accessibility for residents, as well as its central city location.

The new facility will have 32 dog runs with a separate Quarantine and Isolation Area and 66 Cat Cages, 36 designed for adoption.   The new shelter will also have a cat colony located in the front lobby and a get-acquainted room for potential adopters to meet animals and see if they will be a good fit for their homes.

The new facility will also focus strongly on animal adoptions and placement.  Thanks to incredible volunteer support, the City found homes for 184 animals in 2012 and this year’s rate is currently 34% higher than last years. With the ease of access and visibility of the new location the City hopes to even further increase the adoption rate, along with provide a better home for our animals.

The La Porte Animal Adoption Center and Shelter represents an exciting step forward for the Animal Control staff and they are looking forward to serving the Citizens of La Porte in the new building.  For more information on the groundbreaking event or the upcoming facility, please contact Animal Control Supervisor Clarence Anderson at 281-471-3700.
