SAN LEON - A 16-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister were hospitalized yesterday evening after they were struck by an suspected intoxicated driver.
Sheriff's Office Major Ray Tuttoilmondo said Steven Morello and his sister Katelyn were running along the east shoulder in the 1300 block of East Bayshore Drive in San Leon shortly before 7:30 PM
when a gold Toyota Camry swerved onto the shoulder and struck them, knocking them into a ditch. The driver of the Camry left the scene without stopping.
Witnesses were able to help Galveston County Sheriff's deputies investigating the hit-and-run find the Camry about ten blocks away in the 400 block of 7th Street. Kimberly Louise Shano, 21,
of Bacliff, was arrested there after investigators were able to identify her as the driver of the car. Shano remains in custody at the Galveston County Jail charged with two counts of
Intoxicated Assault with a Motor Vehicle. Her bonds total $10,000.
Deputies suspect Shano may have been impaired by some type of drug. A mandatory blood sample taken from Shano is being submitted to a Department of Public Safety laboratory for
The youths were flown to UTMB Emergency Room in Galveston via air ambulance. The boy is listed in critical condition, while the girl is reported as stable.
