Kimberly Shano
July 8, 2010

SAN LEON - A 16-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister were hospitalized yesterday evening after they were struck by an suspected intoxicated driver.

Sheriff's Office Major Ray Tuttoilmondo said Steven Morello and his sister Katelyn were running along the east shoulder in the 1300 block of East Bayshore Drive in San Leon shortly before 7:30 PM when a gold Toyota Camry swerved onto the shoulder and struck them, knocking them into a ditch.  The driver of the Camry left the scene without stopping.

Witnesses were able to help Galveston County Sheriff's deputies investigating the hit-and-run find the Camry about ten blocks away in the 400 block of 7th Street.  Kimberly Louise Shano, 21, of Bacliff, was arrested there after investigators were able to identify her as the driver of the car.  Shano remains in custody at the Galveston County Jail charged with two counts of Intoxicated Assault with a Motor Vehicle.  Her bonds total $10,000.

Deputies suspect Shano may have been impaired by some type of drug.  A mandatory blood sample taken from Shano is being submitted to a Department of Public Safety laboratory for analysis.

The youths were flown to UTMB Emergency Room in Galveston via air ambulance.  The boy is listed in critical condition, while the girl is reported as stable.

Comments:
She made bail and is now running free. Galveston County really screwed up. $10,000 for a hit and run while intoxicated!!!! Steven isn't expected to make it through the night and this woman is on the run!?!?!? Where is the justice?

This is very disturbing. This girl running around, messed up on who knows what, runs over 2 kids, killing one, and just leaves the scene? And lets say, for arguments sake, that she wasn't under the influence of anything. Then that makes it even worse because she was unimpared when she chose to leave 2 children laying in a ditch. Then to further show the failings of the law they make it possible for this same person to get back to the streets for a thousand dollars( 10% of the 10k bail). Sad when you can kill a person and seriously injure another and be afforded a bail less than that give to drug dealers.

I'd shudder at having to be in court in your country. You all are so apoplectic and outraged before knowing the "facts" entirely, despite which you've turned into a lynch mob. Why don't you all calm down and wait for the facts, then the trial, and the aftermath THEN. Calm down, citizens! Take a breath. Yes I feel the tragedy, yes the driver may not have been in complete control, yes you don't know the full picture which will be given in court and probably not until then.

Following my earlier comment. Having now learned more about this tragedy and how the family endures it under the most harrowing circumstances I hope the driver is prosecuted and penalised to the full extent of the law, after the trial which should publish all facts. There is no excuse for not stopping unless a driver is blinded by not knowing they'd struck somebody, and that would be a totally unacceptable state to be driving in. This brave family has our moral support.

As a mother of three myself, I'm appalled that there is even a possibility this murderer who purposefully swerved across two lanes of traffic to murder a child might get off.

This young boy who would have started high school this year, whose final selfless act in this world was pushing his little sister out of the way to save her life, this vibrant boy is GONE because of a drug-addicted murderer.

I'm disgusted. I'm angry. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of this druggie woman being out on the streets.

She was not drunk when she hit the children, but she had a mixture of five drugs in her system in large amounts - all the while being 6 months pregnant with her own child. THIS IS NOT A WOMAN THAT NEEDS TO BE ANYWHERE BUT JAIL FOR A LONG, LONG TIME.

She has been convicted and should be in jail for at least 10 years

Let's be thankful this MONSTER is off the streets. This family has been through enough. We will continue to offer prayers and support for this family.
