Robert E. Lee, New Police Chief in Alvin
Robert E. Lee, New Police Chief in Alvin
March 27, 2013

The city of Alvin has hired former DeSotom Texas assistant police chief Robert E. Lee to take over as Chief of it's Police Dept. in April.

Lee, 47, has been with the DeSoto Police Department 21 years and has served as assistant chief, interim chief, as a lieutenant, sergeant, in internal affairs, in criminal investigations and as a patrol officer.

DeSoto is about 17 miles south of Dallas.

Lee said DeSoto is very similar in land area to Alvin, but has around 50,000 residents compared to Alvin's approximately 25,000. The DeSoto Police Department has around 106 officers and the Alvin about 50.

Lee has extensive experience in strategic planning and leadership, has taught law enforcement and college-level criminal justice-related subjects for numerous years at the Dallas County Community College, Cedar Valley Police Academy and the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas.

Lee has been a police officer for more than 24 years, has a bachelor's degree in law enforcement administration and a master's degree in strategic leadership.

Lee is married and has two sons, one of whom works as a detention officer in Tarrant County and expects to attend police academy soon, and another son age 17. He has been married for 27 years. Lee was born in Longview. His father was a police officer and an uncle served in the Houston Police Department.

Alvin city manager Terry Lucas said Lee's reputation in the DeSoto community and police department were high marks for him. Lucas worked in law enforcement 33 years, 27 of them in Alvin.

The chief will be paid $110,973 annually with a $400 per month vehicle allowance and a cell phone allowance.

Lucas said he has no particular agenda for what he hopes Lee will initiate, change or pursue.

Alvin Mayor Gary Appelt said the city went through an extensive search, which included about 40 applicants.

The police chief position became vacant when 21-year veteran leader of the department Mike Merkel retired after being elected Brazoria County justice of the peace for precinct 3, place 1 in November.

Capt. Chad Fontenot served as interim police chief. Lee is expected to assume the reins of the department in late April.
